Unit 1

This post explores the dynamics of " Social constructionist perspective" and "Psychological perspective".Couched in the theory of the "social constructionist perspective" the idea of this insight defines that things such as money , newspapers, the economy, etc would have not existed if there wasnt any society.Since in " social constructionist perspective"- Communication creates individual, this further accentuates that the idea is to expose the way a particular kind of belief has been shaped by the society. For example the movie "Invictus" by Clint Eastwood which released on the 11th Decembr 2009 is an aspiring true story of how Newly Elected President Nelson Mandela played by Matt Damon knows that his nation is in the midst of a racial and economic crisis. In reference to this movie this is the particular kind of belief that has been shaped by society. Believing that he can bring his people together by joining forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match. Nelson Mandela in the movie ignores the social context in which communication occurs so instead of solving the conflict of the movie with the clique soliloquy filled with words, the movie uses the tool of rugby which is the national sport of South Africa symbolizing the culture and roots of the country to create a collective representation of reality. So here we see how individuals create communication, Nelson uses sport to communicate with the mass media . What makes this movie unique and complex is that it shows spoken words with the aim of communication isnt everything , there's always clarity in the frankness and framework of the cultural aspect which holds the movie together.

Eventhough life isnt as easy as a rugby match but it is an obligation for everyone to look for hope and ways in which conflicts can be solved either by communicating in the human mind or by communicating socially.

  2. Dear Malika,

You have given a clear insight about the mentioned movie. I personally have not watched the movie but your account though done succinctly has done its task to provide an example for the communication method and the stated perspectives, with the help of the example the perspective has indirectly been explained clearly. I definitely agree with your conclusion “Even though life isn’t as easy as a rugby match but it is an obligation for everyone to look for hope and ways in which conflicts can be solved either by communicating in the human mind or by communicating socially.”

A comment though, you should have defined the perspective individually to let readers understand the words before having to relate with the example, particularly readers from different field of study.

Despite it is still a great article and summary :)

  4. Heyy Malika,
I have to agree with Sujaya here, i personally havent seen the movie but the way u have summarized the story was clear enough for the readers to understnd. Now i really dont know the types of communication nor do i understand it but i must say i agree with the fact that communication may not only occur directly or face to face but it can also occur through a mediator, like it was discussed in this article, through a rugby game. You have made a very good article Malika, keep up the good work :)

  10. This post has made me realised that communication is not just restricted to verbal and non-verbal but it can also be done via other channels such a game. In the example of the movie, rugby. Interesting! Thanks for the post, Malika! :)

  11. Dear Malika,

You show great understanding of the dynamics of communication and society. Your post proves as an incentive for me to watch this movie. It was particularly interesting as studying psychology and sociology for me has always proved to have interesting overlaps. It's a very critically analysed article.
    Great job!

  14. I myself have never watched this movie but I like the way you have analyze and applied what we learned in class. Who knew using a sport would be a form of communication as well? I think I remember watching a Hindi film, Chak De! India, staring Shahrukh Khan and they used Hockey to explores religious bigotry, the legacy of partition, ethnic/regional prejudice, and sexism in contemporary India through field hockey.

  15. Yumna here!...Well i believe sociology and the workings of society play a major role in psychology and its effects on other people. Everything we do has an effect on us and others as well! I mean we all talk about individualistic ideas and what not but at the end of the day the people round us effect our perception and decisions all the time!!

  17. Thanks hanhan! I am glad that you understood the motive and message of this blog.I totally agree with your analogy with the movie" Chake de!". It follows the same concept and incentive like the movie" Invictus"

  18. Hey Yumna. Thanks for replying to my question. Thats true our psyhchological perspective does influence others around us .Specially people who arevery persuasive, we tend to get influenced and in this casem everyone was influenced by Nelson's idea which proved to have great afte effetcs

  19. i like how you related the communication theory to the movie, and true, communication does create an individual, it is also the basis of our everyday lives. Not only did communication start the first newspaper as it did try to get messages across, but it broadens up our minds and brings the world together.

Your relation was brilliant, though i have a tiny objection, in my opinion, it is not communication that creates an individual, it is an individual that creates communication. think about it.

  20. Thank you for appreciating the way i have related communication ideas to the movie. Yes, i completely do agree that individuals do create communication and i have mentioned this in my post as well . Although there are instances where communication does create individuals.Factors that govern a society such as our culture,it wouldnt have existed if there wasnt media and media symbolises communication. It is these norms and boundaries that creates an individual and shapes their approach.

In relation to the movie. the concept of " communication creates individual" has been used in the very fact on how the society has been shaped, the existing society that had been shaped by the norms and rigidness of the media.

where as the concept of " individual creates communication" can be seen in the way Nelson uses his own thoughts and ideas to break all grounds and do something different :)

  21. I think that psychological perspective is a more strong. Its human tendency to get influenced very fast as a result our thoughts and belifs could be easily adapted by someother person. Just like how it happens in this movie. He even uses non verbal communication to bring across his messages. Silence speaks louder than words.
