President Barack Obama has called a meeting ( Health Summit Meeting) of representative leaders from the two parties- The Senate and the House on Thursday, 25February 2010. The aim of this meeting is to propose health insurance reform that offers various guarantee choices and enhances quality health care for all Americans. He looks forward to discussing ideas for further improvements from Republicans and Democrats at the meeting. “Some Republican leaders, fearing a charade, have questioned whether there's any reason to go, but they also fear a boycott would play into Obama's hands. Will the meeting accomplish anything?”
The concept of the Health summit has been interlinked with the four characteristics of group communication, beginning with Interaction.
Interaction the conclusive characteristic of a group is the central element of the characteristic model of group communication, the rest of the model specifies factors and relationships that influences and are influenced by the interactive processes. The interaction process influences the group members, the environment, and the relationships in the group. In reference to the Health summit we can see how there is interaction between the president , the house and senate , the members of congress, republicans and democrats. All of them belonging to one group ; to one confederation. The last three quoted sentences are very important in the area of interaction as it shows how the group members with particular reference to the "Republicans” are not willing to attend the Health summit as they are not sure about the potential of the meeting and are to some extent fear what the president's decision would be determining the legitimacy of individual and group goals.
In general as tasks become more difficult , complex ,and significant , the more likely people will prefer to compete them through the co-ordinated group activity of being interdependence rather than individual activity.
Other more psychological and interpersonal factors also influence people’s thoughts in co- operating with others .When individuals fear that they may be blamed for a bad decision , they might form a group in order to help them make decisions to avoid responsibility for negative outcome. In the context of the Health Summit we can see that President Barack Obama is interdependent on the opinions and thoughts of the other members of the Confederation so he could come up with a reasonable solution. The last three sentences of the first paragraph shows how the members in particular reference to the “ Republicans” are interdependent to the President’s decision whether they like it or not ,further depicting the recognition of full membership as time comes.
When one is practicing group communication it is important to be competent as it helps in promoting shared behavioural standards which further enhances the shared values that holds the group together such as integrity, teamwork, respect for diversity, etc. In context to the Health summit we can see how shared behavioural standards has been applied as the nature of the problem that is to be solved by the group is more practical rather than theoretical and requires emotional intelligence and knowledge.
Proximity increases interaction between people and repeated interaction may result in interacts thinking of themselves as a group and even people outside the group begin to think of them as a group due to their collective identity. In the context of the Health summit we can see how the people involved in the group belong to the government of the United States. The factors that bind them together are their similarities, their professional background and their goal of reforming the health care system.

Another in depth entry! Thumbs up!
ReplyDeleteI agree that having a summit is more effective as the proximity of all representative decreased and there are higher chances of them interacting with each other. As compared to dealing with the issue when one is far away from each other.
I agree with all the factors you have mentioned. Group behavior is fascinating and very important. In all real life situations there comes a time when we need group behavior in schools, colleges or at your work place. Its an important fact of life. It encourages healthy competition. Also, an in-group and out-group effect and a sense of identity!

You msut be wondering why im writing anonymously ! its cause i have no idea how to work this blog thingy!!!>...wht do i do??..do i have to make my own profile to comment??
ReplyDeleteGroup communication is indeed very important. The calling of a summit is effective as it brings people together with a similiar aim. They work together for the benefit of the team and then for themeselves. However i think your mentio of emotional contrast and knowledge. These are two contradictng things. They cant be practiced at the same time ?. It has to either be one of them! Please do explain! thank you
ReplyDeleteI think that in this case you can say that both Republicans and Democrats suffer from a case of groupthink. I'm pretty sure that their ideas don't go beyond certain comfort zones and boundaries that define them as a group. For example, if the Republicans are the more conservative ones their ideas will always be on the safer and less radical side. I don't know much about US politics so that's just an example. In any case, they wouldn't break through their mould because it would be upsetting the group balance. This may work politically but it probably wouldn't benefit society much.
ReplyDeleteIt amuses me how well you manage to analyse such material, your effort is well readable..
ReplyDeleteIts true, group communication is very important in this generation.. but one should always remember not to lose their individuality and their own sense of thnking.
Sam.
Good analysis :) It is also shows that how group communication is very important in governments and how it aims take into the view of what the group wants to achieve at the end of the day.
ReplyDeleteThank u han han . I couldn’t agree any more!.
ReplyDeleteYumna- Yes, it helps in understanding other’s view points and it helps in every aspect of life. It is important as it helps in trying to be more social and enhances interaction, collective identity. It makes you stop thinking about individual benefits and makes you think more about the group
ReplyDeleteWhen one thinks of competency , it is basically the ability to set appropriate goals and to maximize achievement by using knowledge of self , others and context to execute adaptive performances. Thus the need of emotional contrast and knowledge both are required so as to decide an extent of how much goal is planning to be achieved .Its a decision of the heart and mind.
ReplyDeleteFirstly you are to some extent right the republicans were initially viewed as conservatives , now they are trying to head for a more liberal and progressive ideology. I think when you have two different opposing ideas it , it obviously leads to more group pressure. This is how things work , in a group there is always the want of interpersonal needs to be fulfilled, Now that we are talking in terms of government group communication. In this case we can see how there are problems of individual vs. group needs, task vs. maintenance goals as the republicans have no faith in the summit. This is probably not a true pure example of group communication, but it aint the worst either.
ReplyDeleteSam!. Thank you !. Although in group communication its more of a " we" than an "i". Its a collective identity , which is important and necessary for an individual to interact and learn from other people.
ReplyDeleteVery true nisa.. Well said!
ReplyDeleteTrue.. thank you !
ReplyDeleteThis is a great example of a comparision of group characteristics with the summit meeting. All of the concepts of group communication have been implied. Great work done !
ReplyDeletehey there!!
