Communication can be done through media. Media communication includes television , radio and Internet. Through internet as a computer media communication , a message is sent to many people influencing a community. The following article that I read by Sonya Eskridge is concerned with raising a voice with language as an instrument of salvation, selfhood and empowerment.“Love as a color line” is the main underlying theme of this article. There are articles, news segments, movies and even whole books dedicated to the subject . Jill Scott- a R&B song writer, poet and actress has also been referenced in this article. She has written a blog for Essence. Com regarding this issue of Black men marrying woman outside their race.Even "ABC Entertainment news" has been acknowledged in the article provididng reference and facts about the number of single successul black woman .This is how CMC(Computer media communication) plays an important opinion as we are able to see ideas and opinions from various people, all belonging from various aspects and strata of life. The popular Jill Scott is being seen in a different role, in a differnet environment undermining her social contact, accountability and general respect to global issues.
This is a common topic and such articles are written with an aim to infiltrate certain aspects of community life influencing interpersonal relationships and social life. This article is two fold . First it has been written from the writer’s point of view and then proceeds to the generalization of why Black men pair up with White women. The details in the article are figured in terms of Jill's growing awareness of the issue influenced by the ordinary day to day experience and the dichotomy historical aspect of how black men and woman were treated by the westerners. The use of the black linguistic practice such as" brotha", " wince" are meaningful as it shows how the article is deeply personal and culturally specific. This again emphasizes on how the computer media communication could be very knowledgeable as people can voice their opinion using a structural language and culture will give way to “plainspeak”. This is considered a criticism when it comes to e-learning, at the same time I personally think that everyone should be allowed to voice out their opinions. If people are able to debate over an issue and voice our their opinons by transactional communication. How is e-learning any different?
Another aspect that can be seen in this article is how people are more open to various interpretations. It is these common issues that help people to think , see, and reason between various alternatives. This is what I personally think the various implications that the article could convey .Firstly readers might view this as a racist article and have a negative approach to this thinking that teh article is condemning all interracial couples. On the other hand, this article could also be viewed from the point of view that Jill's secondary focus is on white woman. Its focus relies on her experience and history as a black woman living in a society geared towards oppressing people that look like her. Jill describes the reaction that many black woman have seeing their men lusting for the other.

I've read the article and it might seem racist at first but I think deep down, the writer is merely expressing her concern as an African American woman. I personally think that you can't decide on who you are going to end up marrying. It is all written in Fate and who knows? There are White men out there who married an African American woman. Look at David Bowie..he married Iman! hahaha..anyway..I think human becomes more liberal when they are given a platform to speak their mind. CMC FTW!
ReplyDeleteHey....
ReplyDeletewell I really haven't read that article but can surely understand your view on it.
In todays world inter racial marriages are becoming more and more common which I believe is not a bad thing. I agree that every person is an individual one with individual choices and thus such decisions should not be greatly influenced by society and its norms. Influence yes but not to a great extent.

I haven't read the article but it seems to me that Jill Scott's situation is somewhat similar to the movie Save The Last Dance. The protagonist is a white girl living in the ghetto, and she ends up dating the only decent black guy in the neighbourhood. This fuels discontent and racism as the rest of the neighbourhood frowns upon interracial relationships and resents the protagonist for taking away the only good black man.
ReplyDeleteI guess the only way to bring across alternative points of view is to use CMC - only then are opinions seriously considered instead of being dismissed almost immediately.
The article does seem racist at first, but as one gradually is able to analyse it and read your comment one gets to understand the depth of the article. The world is just changing really fast .People have become more broad minded, not really this is an undestatement .In the sense that everyone just has so much to say!. People build issues and opinions which makes one think and at times Over analyse the situation. Its good in a way at the same time.it leads us nowhere. We are currently living in a society where the norms are not really follwed ..
ReplyDeleteThe article you chose definitely portrays agenda setting that we've learnt in COMs and emphasizes how CMCs could be very knowledgeable tool in voicing or informing people about the latest trend or points of concern in society as a whole.
ReplyDeletethe same can be seen in Singapore. Lately there has been a lot of talk about immigrants and how readily they should be accepted into society. the media plays a very important role in illustrating the 'voice' of the people. What and how much they put in can definitely construct a particular mindset.
hey,
ReplyDeletefirst of all, i admire the fact that you put various interpretation about this article into consideration, as a piece of text can be viewed in numerous ways. according to me, at first, one would think that it is a very racist article which is totally against inter-racial marriages, however, nowadays, the world is changing and people are more broad-minded which will not make inter-racial marriages a major issue. i believe it all depends on luck, if one is lucky enough, he/she will be bestowed with a happy marriage.
on the other hand, i also agree that this artricle is shows a very strong expression on the situations faced by black women, but then again, it all depends on the reader on how he/she wants to interpret the article.
Mel- Yea,it depends from person to person. The media helps to shape their thoughts and opinions. either makng them more narrow minded or borad minded. inter racial relationships are a prsonal choice. It is without any doubt hard to practice but when two people are in love i dont think it reall matters . does it?
ReplyDeleteall i can say is... america is a white country, right? and who is their president? YES, A BLACK MAN. It's the 21st century. indians marry italians. latin's marry whites. whites marry asians. and most of the time, they end up living happily ever after. i think peoples personal lives should be left up to them to decide, because at the end of the day, they have to live with each other, not those who judge them.
ReplyDeleteSam.
CMC has become an integral part of our daily communication. Therefore, it is important the media is just a communication mode but not a influential weapon. As for mixed marriages, I think in this millennium, this is considered something normal. I think at times we get to see even people of a wide age range from different races marrying each other. As heard from someone, to each its own.
ReplyDeleteHan han - That’s right. She has the right to let out her opinion. Yes, people tend to voice out their thoughts once they have a platform. Everyone wants to be heard, and let out their opinion. This is not because they want to enforce their opinion. It is important as a learning medium and to be able to loosen up and let out their ideas.
ReplyDeleteYumna- Yes at the end of the day it depends on every individual, what makes them happy. Every person is allowed to make their own decisions , and it should be made entirely by themselves so they do not regret later on.
ReplyDeleteCandice- That’s a great analogy. Yes, people spend a lot of time on the Internet these days, as such they get to more about things around them through CMC!.
ReplyDeleteAkash- I beg to differ, I think that all of us have our own perceptions and we have to have in depth thoughts about certain things, so what are you trying to imply exactly? Do you think we should have a rigid perception or just have a simple approach towards life?
ReplyDeleteThank You!. I think this is the prime advantage of the CMC, one is able to read through such articles and interpret them so they can have a better and more in depth understanding on certain topics.
ReplyDeletewe are so influenced by media and technology that it is safe to say we have become slaves to this.
ReplyDeletemedia has effected us in many ways. it has made things easier and helped us to communicate with people better..
I did read the article. I thought that it was a very good example to provide on the importance of CMC in today's world. The CMC just provides another platform where people are able to interact and express their views. It has to some extent taken over face to face communication.
ReplyDeletehey! the views posted were well explained.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you have explained the content and made it clear that the writer is not racist. Infact, I agree with the writer that inter cultural relationships are not advisable. I think they are risky and can cause trouble if the couple is unable to respect each other culture. Cultural differences can cause conflicts. If the couple has children , it might be difficult for the child to accept both the cultures. It might be diffciult for the child to decide which culture he wants to adopt and incorporate it in his life.
